How much does stump grinding cost in Greenville or Anderson? Our completed records give useful examples: a $200 grinding line on a Greenville removal job, a $300 grinding line on an Anderson removal, and a $250 Anderson invoice for two juniper stumps. Each covered a different scope. Use the details below to decide what your own estimate needs to include, rather than applying one example to every stump.

Section 01What actual paid stump invoices show

May 2026 · Greenville

Recorded grinding charge
$200
Scope and limits
Grinding was a separate line alongside an $800 removal. Removal wood stayed on site. The grinding line did not state depth, chip hauling or soil restoration.

November 2025 · Anderson

Recorded grinding charge
$300
Scope and limits
Grinding the stump from a maple removal. The removal and debris line was $1,000; whole-job total $1,300.

April 2026 · Anderson

Recorded grinding charge
$250 for two stumps
Scope and limits
Two juniper stumps beside a building. The scope called for shallow, below-grade grinding with a utility constraint; this is not evidence that any depth is safe near a buried line.
Selected historical paid invoices, checked September 8, 2026. Amounts are US dollars; no customer identities or street addresses are published.

These selected examples come from Seasoned Tree Care jobs marked closed, with a recorded completion date and a paid invoice. We checked that each invoice belonged to the job shown. Amounts below are the recorded invoice line items in US dollars, not a citywide survey or a current quote. Completion is shown by month; customer names, street addresses and account identifiers are omitted. Bundled services stay bundled because the records do not support inventing a separate price.

Section 02What moves a stump-grinding quote

Stump size and shape

Why it matters
The grinding footprint includes the flared base, not just the narrowest cut surface.

Access

Why it matters
Gate width, steps, slopes, soft soil and the route to the stump affect machine access and work time.

Location

Why it matters
Nearby paving, masonry, fences and buried features can constrain what can be reached.

Depth and purpose

Why it matters
Lawn repair, a planting bed and future construction need different preparation.

Roots and chips

Why it matters
Surface-root work, removing excess grindings and supplying soil should be expressly included or excluded.

Several stumps or combined work

Why it matters
A shared visit may change setup and travel, but the actual scope still needs a price.

Section 03What should be included in the written estimate?

  • Identify every stump and the limits of any surface-root work.
  • Specify the intended grinding depth where conditions permit, and what happens if a buried obstruction prevents that depth.
  • State whether grindings remain in the hole, are spread in an agreed location or are hauled away.
  • Clarify whether soil, leveling, seed, sod or a replacement planting is included.
  • Record access and utility-locating arrangements before scheduling. Mark private irrigation, electrical and septic features as applicable.

Photographs help us prepare an estimate visit. Include a view of the whole stump base, the route from the drive and nearby obstacles. An approximate measurement can help, but avoid entering an unsafe area or disturbing soil to get one. An on-site assessment determines the workable plan.

Section 04Grinding is different from digging out the stump

A grinder reduces wood within an agreed area and depth; it does not pull out the entire underground root system. If your goal is a foundation, driveway or a replacement tree in the exact location, tell the estimator first. Read stump grinding versus stump removal before selecting the method.

Past work, summarized from completed jobs with paid invoices. Customer names and street addresses are omitted. Descriptions reflect the recorded scope; they are not independent condition reports.

Completed November 2025

Driveway oak removal and pruning a retained oak

At this Clemson property, the job paired removal of the oak closest to the driveway with grinding its stump. A separate oak was retained for pruning to address deadwood and clearance from the house.

Two nearby trees may need different treatments. A written estimate should identify the tree to remove and the one to retain and prune.

Section 05After grinding: lawn, planting bed or new tree?

A chip-filled hole and a finished lawn are different endpoints. Agree on the follow-up work, including excess-chip removal and suitable soil if needed. A new tree should have adequate soil and root space; it should not simply be planted into loose stump chips. See our planting guide for species selection and replanting considerations.

If the tree is still standing, request one written plan for removal, material handling and stump work. Our Greenville removal-cost guide and Anderson removal-cost guide show how those lines fit together. For chip and wood choices, use the tree-removal cleanup guide.

Have the stumps, access and final surface included in one written estimate.

Quick answers

Frequently asked questions

It can be quoted for an individual stump or a group, but size, access, depth and finishing requirements matter. Our $250 two-stump example is a historical job total, not a universal per-stump rate.

Only if the estimate says so. Our records include separate $200 and $300 grinding lines on removal jobs. Ask for the removal and grinding scope to be itemized.

No. Grinding removes wood within the agreed work area and depth. Deeper wood and roots can remain. Root extraction and construction preparation require a different discussion.

The line must be identified and the work plan evaluated before grinding. Do not assume a shallow depth is safe. Public utility marking may not identify every privately installed line or irrigation system.
